Near the Basecamp - Feb 4, 2014

The last couple of days have been spent near our basecamp at Silver Springs and the Ocala National Forest, doing a few everyday things that we all have to do from time to time; food shopping, cleaning, paying a bill or two etc. We still have managed to get out and about a little, only just "closer to home". The vastness of the Ocala National Forest means that we don't have far to go to find something interesting to see and do. Just a trail or two, either walking or driving, often satisfies our quest for adventure.

Driving these soft sandy roads is a little like driving in mud. In fact, yesterday while we were out on one of the forest roads, a quick, hard rain shower that Florida is famous for, quickly turned things to mud. I couldn't tell a lot of difference.

Wet or dry, the sand feels soft and boggy under your tires, and it would  be easy to get stuck, if you're not careful to stay in the ruts. Our Jeep Rubicon has made the learning curve easy, and has given us confidence pretty quickly.

Salt Springs Recreation Area

On another outing we visited nearby Salt Springs recreation area. As with most of the springs in the area, the water temperature is a constant 72 degrees, making swimming appealing. The clear water and the soft sandy feel underfoot make it downright pleasurable.

The Salt Springs grounds are beautifully adorned with giant old live oak trees with moss hanging from the huge branches.

A lake adjoining the spring's swimming area adds even more to the laid back surroundings.

There are numerous recreation area springs dotting the forest, just in our immediate area.

We are truly enjoying "living" in this part of central Florida. We can easily see why the "snowbirds" keep coming back here every winter.
