McKinney Texas

McKinney - March 14, 2014

A short drive to McKinney, Texas was a fantastic way to end our first week in the Dallas area. After finding one of the last available parking spaces in the downtown public parking lot, I went for a walk with my camera while the girls went off to play in the quilt shop.

Over the past few years, McKinney has been named One of the best places to live, One of the best places to raise a family, One of the safest cities in the US, One of the best places to move to, One of the best Job growth counties, and One of the fastest growing cities in the US.

Today the historic downtown area was bustling with activity from shoppers scurrying about to workmen repairing streets, to delivery trucks weaving in and out among the traffic.

What were at one time banks, cotton mills and warehouses, now are unique shops, art galleries, and unusual restaurants.

Surrounding the downtown square are neighborhoods with old elaborate homes in various stages of restoration. Some are simply awaiting some TLC to be started on them. Others are in the process and many are completely restored and now serve as bed and breakfasts or elaborate private homes. One such restoration is the beautiful Heard-Craig House which is now a Center for the Arts.

After finishing my walk and taking lots of photos, the girls were still in the quilt shop. I was starting to wonder whether they had taken on jobs, when they emerged each carrying a small sack.

Fortunately, I resisted asking why it took so long to.........(men will understand). I suspect women will too, especially the quilters. Truly, I appreciated having the extra time to learn about McKinney.

After a nice lunch together, then a drive through the older neighborhoods, and finally a stop to look at a couple of RV Parks on the way back, we arrived back home to a nice crock-pot dinner.

Today was a very nice retirement day.  We are truly blessed.
